Planning a Dive Trip? Be Prepared!

There are many health risks associated with travel, and some of them may be life-threatening. You can prevent or reduce many of the risks.

Before You Leave:

Keep your DAN membership card available with your luggage or passports.

Call DAN to make sure any insurance coverage you might have purchased is adequate and up-to-date.

Compare insurance programs to make sure you have all the coverage you need (This is ancillary to DAN's membership benefits, which include diving and certain non-diving medical and evacuation cover benefits).

Talk to a DAN Medic if you have any questions regarding your health and diving.

Visit your Travel Clinic for any prophylaxis or immunisations required.

Activate your cell phone roaming if possible, and save the DAN Hotline number to your phone: 0800 020 111 (SA Locally) +27 82 810 6010(Outside SA)

Pre-Travel Precautions:
The most important pre-travel precautions are vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis. For more information on vaccinations you can contact any locally based travel clinic in your area, or for the Johannesburg Travel Clinic: +27 11 214 9030.

For more information on the malaria prophylaxis guidelines, see our FAQ section.

This is important not only for the travelling party of divers, but also for their non-diving family, relatives or friends that may be accompanying them on the holiday.

 Emergency Assistance Plan:
You may also consider stocking a first aid kit to take with on the trip, as well as a DAN Oxygen Unit for emergencies, and assign the responsibility to a person in the group that has undergone the necessary training to administer first aid and oxygen. You can email:
